Hiking & Wilderness Survival Outdoor Day Information

TRIP DATES: Friday, January 26

DESCRIPTION OF THE TRIP: This 1-day workshop will include wilderness first aid, backcountry survival techniques, and fire (if and where permitted) and shelter building. While hiking in local parks and wilderness areas, students will learn from wilderness experts how to thrive in the wilderness.

ITINERARY: Note: This is a tentative schedule that may change due to weather and other factors.

  • 8:30 AM Meet guides at Crothall and depart 8:40 AM for East Sooke Park or Goldstream Park

  • Gear distribution and equipment check by guides

  • Hiking and wilderness survival in East Sooke Park/Goldsteam.

  • 2:15 PM pickup and return to Crothall ~ 3:00 PM.

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT: Students do not need to wear school uniform on outtrips/outdoor days. Regular clothing and running shoes are great. They should dress for the weather and arrive with the following items in a small backpack (the student’s regular school backpack is perfect)

  • Raincoat/windproof jacket

  • Rain pants/gore-tex pants

  • Extra warm layers (fleece jacket, extra fleece pants)

  • Baseball cap, sunglasses, sunscreen

  • Toque

  • Gloves/mitts

  • Running shoes/hiking boots (if you have them)

  • Wool or synthetic socks are ideal

  • Journal/pencil/pen (optional)

  • Hearty lunch, snacks and full water bottle

ELECTRONICS/PHONES: Students should not use electronics or phones while on the activity.

MEALS/FOOD: Students should bring a hearty lunch and snacks. A bag lunch will be provided for boarding students.

GROUP EQUIPMENT: The guides will bring activity-specific equipment for the group. This will include tarps, navigation equipment, maps, rope…The guides will also bring emergency response equipment (emergency communication device, first aid kit).

TRANSPORTATION: Students will be traveling to and from the activity on a school bus or a school van driven by one of the instructors.

STAFFING/SUPERVISION: One or more OED guides/teacher with be with students

SUPERVISOR/STUDENT RATIO: 1:20

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: This is a school-sponsored outing and school rules apply. Participants are expected to follow the safety guidelines set by the instructional staff and the resort staff. Participants should arrive with the equipment outlined in this package.
