SURFBOARD REPAIR WORKSHOP
WORKSHOP DATE: Wed, Jan 14 (6:30-8:30 pm)
DESCRIPTION: This workshop will provide students with an opportunity to learn how to fix or repair a surfboard. Whether it’s a broken fin, a lifting deckpad or a hole in the fiber-glass, students will work with the instructor to diagnose and then repair the problem. Within the workshop, students will also learn about surf board design and features, as well as learning about the full board shaping course.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: These activities are designed to give participants an opportunity to develop their repair skills, learn about patching, board-shaping and fiber-glassing. Students will have an opportunity to work with a range of tools, from sanders and saws to measuring tools and some electric tools including planers and sanders. Students will also be working with epoxy and other materials needed for fiber-glassing.
LOCATION: Workshop sessions will take place at the Derby OED building (3410 Shelbourne).
COST: None. Instruction, materials (a blank board) and supplies and a safety equipment (dust mask, googles) included.
REGISTRATION: Students should email craig.farish@smus.ca to register for the session. If students have their own board needing repair, please also email Mr. Farish a photo of the board and the damage so we can prep supplies.
PERSONAL EQUIPMENT: Students should wear old clothing, baseball cap and shoes that can will dusty, dirty and stained. (the sort of thing you would wear for painting)
SAFETY/SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Various stages of building a surfboard repair are dusty. Safety equipment including dust masks, goggles, gloves, adequate ventilation… will be in place and provided for students.
STAFFING/SUPERVISION: There will be an OED instructor working with the students at Derby.
STAFF/STUDENT RATIO: 1:10
EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT: OED instructors will have access to cell phones and emergency contact information.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: This is a school-sponsored outing and school rules apply. Participants are expected to follow the safety guidelines set by the instructional staff and the resort staff. Participants should arrive with the equipment outlined in this package.
