CROSS GRADE 8 PE (XPE) PARENT INFORMATION

GOAL: The SMUS Cross Grade 8 (XPE) program is designed to introduce students to a wide range of athletic experiences. All activities are provided at an introductory level. No previous experience is required.

POTENTIAL ACTIVITIES: Working with our SMUS PE teachers, external instructors and guides, the students will learn about and get an introduction to a variety of sports. Examples include:

DATES: Sessions run from October 2023 through to June 2024. XPE sessions run within the regular school day, typically 10:20am to 11:55am.

TRANSPORTATION: Students will walk to local activities (on campus, Mt. Tolmie…). For off campus activities, students will be transported in a school bus.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: Students need to be in the normal physical education clothing / swimsuit for use in swimming pool. All other equipment will be provided when necessary.

STAFFING: Qualified instructors/guides and SMUS PE faculty will be in charge of other activities at the school.

INSTRUCTOR/STUDENT RATIO: 1/10 to 1/20 depending on the activity

COST: None.

REGISTRATION: Parents/guardians are required to complete the SMUS XPE online consent form (below). They may also be required to complete specific waivers for external companies/facilities.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: This is a school-sponsored outing and school rules will apply. Participants are expected to follow the guidelines set by the instructional staff. A failure to meet these guidelines or any action against the school policies of the school may result in the participant being removed from the activity at their own expense. Participants should arrive with the equipment outlined in this package.

RISKS AND HAZARDS: Many of these activities involve a higher level of risk. Examples include Rock Climbing, Gymnastics, Swimming/Water sports and Contact sports. These activities all have activity-specific hazards and a higher level of risk and potential for injury. Please contact the MS PE department if you have questions about any of these activities. 

SWIMMING: Prerequisite: Water-based activities have a minimum swimming level requirement. Students must be able to swim at least 25 meters to participate in watersports programs.

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT: The lead teacher is responsible for carrying the following: An appropriate first aid kit, Cell phone or pre-established means to communicate with the school or emergency services, and access to Student Medical Information.
