INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING INFORMATION

TRIP DATE: 1/2 day on January 26 or Jan 29

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY: This workshop will provide students with a 1/2 day of climbing/bouldering at the CARSA climbing gym at the University of Victoria.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: These are activities designed to give participants an opportunity to learn/practice their rock climbing skills, from bouldering, top-rope climbing, and climbing with an auto-belay device. Students may have the opportunity to learn to belay, or practice this skill if they have learned how to do this in the past.

UVIC/CARSA ROCK CLIMBING WAIVER: A waiver is required by UVIC for Indoor Rock Climbing. The waiver can be found here and will also be emailed to parents. The completed waiver (both pages) should be emailed back to craig.farish@smus.ca

Note: CARSA requires waivers to be submitted as:

  1. Original paper waivers

  2. Digitally signed waivers

  3. A clear and legible scan of the waiver (as in, it needs to be a very clear and legible version of waiver.

TRANSPORTATION: Students will be traveling to and from CARSA in a school bus

ITINERARY:

Morning Climbing groups

  • 8:45 am - Meet at Crothall bus loop.

  • Depart for 1/2 day morning climbing session at UVIC/CARSA

  • 11:35 am - pickup at UVIC/CARSA. Return to Crothall

  • Lunch break. Boarding students head to Sun Centre.

  • 12:15 am - meet at Bolton/Timmis common room for Cooking.

  • Afternoon cooking activity

Afternoon Climbing groups

  • Morning cooking activity

  • Lunch break. Boarding students head to Sun Centre for a quick lunch.

  • noon - Meet at Crothall bus loop.

  • Depart for 1/2 day afternoon at UVIC/CARSA

  • 2:35 pm pickup at CARSA/UVIC. Return to Crothall

FOOD: Day students should bring a hearty bag lunch and snack, as well as a full water bottle. Boarding students will go to Sun Centre for lunch. They should bring a water bottle.

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT: Students should bring a backpack with the following items:

  • A hearty lunch and snacks (Boarders will go to Sun Centre for lunch)

  • A full water bottle

  • Active-wear clothing

  • Rain jacket and warm layers

  • Closed-toe athletic shoes

PHONES: Students should not bring or use their phones during the activities.

STAFFING/SUPERVISION: There will be a SMUS chaperone for the whole day, and a CARSA rock climbing instructor while the students are rock climbing.

STAFF/STUDENT RATIO: 1:15

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT: SMUS and CARSA chaperones have first-aid certifications. SMUS Chaperone will carry cell phones and emergency contact information.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: This is a school-sponsored outing and school rules apply. Participants are expected to follow the safety guidelines set by the instructional staff and the resort staff. Participants should arrive with the equipment outlined in this package.
