SURF BOARD DESIGN and SHAPING INTRODUCTION

TRIP DATE: Full day on January 29, 2024

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY: This workshop will provide students with a full day introduction to surf board design and shaping at the Derby OED building and may include a visit to a local surf shop.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: These activities are designed to give participants an opportunity to learn/practice the design and board-shaping skills, including the safe and appropriate use of tools. Students will have an opportunity to work with tools such as power drills, measuring tools, handsaws and sanders. Students will also learn about the process for building and fiberglassing a surfboard.

TRANSPORTATION: Students may be walking to and from Derby (3410 Shelbourne) or travel in the SMUS van. For the trip to a local surf shop, students will be traveling in a SMUS van driven by one of the instructors.

ITINERARY:

  • 8:45 am - Meet at Crothall and depart for Derby

  • 3:15 pm - Return to Crothall

FOOD: Students should bring a hearty bag lunch and a hearty afternoon snack, as well as a full water bottle. (Boarders will be provided lunch and snacks)

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT: Students should bring a backpack with the following items:

  • A hearty lunch and snacks

  • A full water bottle

  • Active-wear clothing that can get dusty/dirty

  • Rain jacket and warm layers (for walking to and from Derby)

  • Closed-toe athletic shoes

PHONES: Students should not bring or use their phones during the activities.

STAFFING/SUPERVISION: There will be an OED guide/instructor working with the students at Derby.

STAFF/STUDENT RATIO: 1:15

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT: OED instructors will have access to cell phones and emergency contact information.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: This is a school-sponsored outing and school rules apply. Participants are expected to follow the safety guidelines set by the instructional staff and the resort staff. Participants should arrive with the equipment outlined in this package.
